Specifying CAD Workstations, Demystified

Processor: Spec Xeon over I5/I7 chips…

Ram: More is always better but look at the speed, it makes a difference. Also get ECC no matter what…

Hard Drive: Get SDD if you can along with SATA 3.0 Disk Controller…

Video Card: Workstation versions no matter what…

Here are some simple rules:

  • Buy one processor down from the top; clock speed is king with BIM/CAD!
  • Use the savings from buying the second-fastest processor available to invest in RAM.
  • Most BIM/CAD users really don’t need a high-end graphics card, but they probably need more than an entry-level card, so invest in a $300 midrange option.
  • Take your savings from buying the right graphics card and invest in an SSD.
